The Establishment of Ethnic Studies at CUNY

As a result of the protests at City College, campuses begin adding programs in various fields of ethnic studies. The addition of these programs faces both support and opposition from faculty and outside sources.

    • Article details faculty opposition to components of both the school of Black and Puerto Rican studies and the “dual admissions” plan. The beginning of this article from the Times is quite misleading – it suggests widespread opposition to the reforms, while it later reveals that the faculty overwhelmingly support the creation of a department. The majority did, however, reject the creation of an entirely separate school.
  • “Hunter Is Offering Black Studies Degree Courses:” Read more.
    • In quite a different tone from the article about city, this piece mentions the addition and robustness of these degree-granting programs in a positive light (including the Puerto Rican Department being added at Lehman College, which the college “boasts.”). City’s underdeveloped program is mildly chided.

    • A very “straight news” article from The Amsterdam News (a historically Black newspaper).
